Can working on the computer all day make your eyes worse? No, not really, but it can make them tired
and strained. However, good computer ergonomics can help keep your eyes fresh at the end of the day.
Your ability to focus at your computer distance is controlled by the ciliary muscle just behind your
iris. When this muscle flexes, it makes your crystalline lens focus on your screen. Just like any
muscle in your body, the ciliary muscle gets tired which leads to eye strain and even causes headaches
around your forehead and temples. To keep your eyes going strong, follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every
twenty minutes, take a 20 second break and look 20 feet away from you. This puts the muscle in its
relaxed position more often and you can be more productive at work without the headache.
What's new in vision correction procedures
The success and safety of IntraLase femtosecond laser (Advanced Medical Optics, Irvine, CA) for
all-laser LASIK has paved the way for other femtosecond laser systems. Three others have emerged:
Zeimer Femto LDV (Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems Group, Port, Switzerland), Femtec 20/10 (20/10 Perfect
Vision, Heidelberg, Germany), and Visumax (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). They all operate on
the basic principle of focusing the ultra-fast pulses of laser light within the cornea to create a
LASIK flap. Some can be used for other types of corneal surgery. And some can even be used to do a
flap and the corneal reshaping all at once. The ease of use and technical features vary between the

Monitoring blood glucose level is essential to keeping diabetes in check. A "finger prick" method is
commonly used by patients throughout the day. But, in the near future, we may have something much
easier and more pleasant. A new non-invasive glucose measurement device is being developed by
Freedom Meditech (La Jolla, Calif.) and Battelle (Columbus, Ohio). It will function in a manner
similar to binoculars. The device will shine light on one eye for less than a second, resulting in a
digital glucose readout. Pilot clinical studies are due to begin this year. So, your eyes are not
only the windows to your soul anymore, they are the gateway to the rest of you.

Scientists and poets alike have been intrigued by color for centuries. Oscar Wilde once said:
"Mere colour, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a
thousand different ways." Color therapy has even become part of medicine. Seasonal affective
disorder can be treated with light and color therapy. Certain colors, like blue and green, for
example, are thought to promote a relaxed state of mind. Red stimulates brain activity. Yellow
promotes energy and stimulates appetite. Pink has been used in diet therapy to suppress appetite.
What is color? Color is a byproduct of the spectrum of light. Visible light is made of seven
wavelength groups. These are the colors you see in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo, and violet - the Mr. ROY G. BIV you might have been introduced to in elementary school
science. When a ray of light hits a surface, some wavelengths are absorbed and others are reflected
depending on the materials in the object. The reflected wavelengths are what we perceive as the
object's color. So, for those who remember the "Blue Lagoon", it's not really blue after all, it
just reflects blue.
